The still small hours. How often do we find ourselves with racing minds during the quiet moments? Are we awake in the dark with restless souls and minds, or working throughout our day distracted from our tasks? Are you folding laundry while your mind wanders to your to-do list and you start to feel overwhelmed and anxious? Or scrubbing the shower and feeling weighed down by how you responded out of frustration when your child asked for their 17th snack of the day. Maybe sitting and feeding your young ones while making a mental list of everything you had hoped to accomplish before dinner time and feeling frustrated with the time you have to take away from your busyness? Whatever it is we are doing and however it is that we feel in these moments where we are still enough for our minds to wander, we all have only one task that is required of us. Be still. Be still and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
How does it look to be still in these moments? It doesn't mean that we have to literally stand or sit and put off what we are doing, but it does mean that we are to stop worrying, stop trying to take control and listen to what God has to say to us in those moments. I read once that we are to imagine ourselves like little children, walking through a patch of wild berries, one hand held firmly in the hand of our father and the other scooping up handfuls of delicious fruit. If we think of the father in the image as our Heavenly Father and the berries as being all our responsibilities, enjoyments and other lawful things we are to partake in we can see where we so often fall short in our relationships with God.
We are to be holding firmly onto the hand of our Heavenly Father so that we may be kept safe from falling and that we may also be comforted by His presence. "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you." I hope that you can take this image with you for the remainder of the week and remember to be still, so that you may hear the voice of God throughout your day, comforting your soul and guiding your steps. Be still and know.
