Do you ever suddenly notice the dust that has settled in the corners of your home? the cobwebs laced across the walls and ceilings? We see them, and we make a mental note to clear them away, but it is forgotten faster than the dust crept in in the first place.
How about the dust settled in the corners of your hearts? Your guilty pleasures, sinful thoughts or habits that are displeasing to God. How often are we pricked by a sermon or something we read in the scriptures and are reminded of this dust that is settled in the corners of our hearts? Are we content to just leave it settled until we have time or we are ready to take action?
In Proverbs chapter 4 we are instructed to keep our hearts with all diligence and we read in Psalm 24 "He that hath clean hands and a pure heart; who hath not lifted his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation." Only God can give us clean and pure hearts, let us plead with Him as David did in Psalm 51 to be washed from our iniquity. Let us acknowledge our transgressions before him, seek that a clean heart would be created within us and that we may be washed with his righteousness.
Let us flee our youthful lusts and follow righteousness, faith, charity and peace with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. With God's help and by him alone we can be washed from all the evils that have settled in the corners of our hearts. Only then can we truly be filled with the joy and praises of the God of our salvation.
